Garden World’s Guide to Gardening - How To Create The Perfect Fall Planter

If you haven’t gotten around to decorating your garden for fall that’s ok! We’re here to help give you tips on how to spice up your garden before the cold of winter arrives. In this week's Guide to Gardening, we’re going to tell you how to create your own fall planter using a few staple items that will make a beautiful addition to your home! These planters are perfect for a backyard patio, front porch, or entryway. Trust us, your neighbors will be jealous!

Here’s What You’ll Need

- A medium to large container of your preference.

-Potting soil.

-Fall plants!

(We recommend mums, ornamental kale and cabbage, ornamental peppers, celosia and pansies!)

That’s all! Now let’s get to work! 

Putting It All Together

Once you have all your items, the first thing you’ll want to do is fill your container with potting soil. You’ll want to fill the majority of the planter leaving a few inches to spare on top. This will give you the ability to move the soil around to make your plants fit perfectly together. 

Next, remove each plant from its original pot and begin to gently squeeze the roots at the bottom of each one a few times. This will loosen the bottom of the plant to prepare it for transplant.

When you decide where you want to place each plant, start by making a hole in the soil to give yourself a clear place to insert the plant. After you place the plant, you can add more soil surrounding it and press down to ensure the plant is compacted in the pot. Repeat this with each plant in your container. 

If your planter is on the larger side and you want to add something extra, add a few small pumpkins or gourds to the edges of your planter! This will give a beautiful fall finishing touch to your arrangement!
