Garden World’s Guide to Gardening - BRIGHTEN YOUR LANDSCAPE WITH AZALEAS!

Nothing is more beautiful than an Azalea shrub in spring bloom. These easy-care shrubs come in bold, bright colors, making it easy to find one that suits your needs. Azaleas can be grown in nearly any garden, instantly adding interest and color to drab areas. If you follow these simple steps, you’ll be sure to grow a big, beautiful azalea!

How To Care For Your Azalea

These shrubs should be planted in the spring, preferably within cool, lightly shaded sites. Full sun can actually burn the leaves while heavy shade can deprive them, resulting in poor blooming and weaker growth.

Azaleas have shallow roots and require well-drained, acidic soil. In poorly drained areas, Azaleas should be placed in raised beds. Azaleas can also make exceptional candidates for containers.

Keep azalea soil evenly moist, so it never dries completely out and never stays overly wet. Sunny plantings generally need more water than shaded plantings, which don't dry out as fast. A 3-inch layer of organic mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep soil temperatures from fluctuating.

Water early in the day, so the sun can dry leaves when they do get wet. This will reduce the chances of fungal disease.

Regular all-purpose fertilizers can fall short in providing Azaleas with the special nutrients they need. Azaleas need a premium fertilizer designed especially for them. At Garden World, we recommend Holly Tone!

To prevent lost flowers, always prune Azaleas immediately after they finish blooming. This helps ensure you prune before new flower buds form.

When Azaleas burst into bloom, it's hard to resist the urge to add one or more to your landscape. These spectacular shrubs are easy to grow once you understand their basic needs.
